Our mission statement:

"META 2014 celebrates the expression, innovation and evolution of the creative minds of tomorrow emerging from the New Media Program at Ryerson University."

Curatorial statement:

The term New Media Art is multi-faceted; it encompasses a spectrum of disciplines and forms. One might say that its definition is always open to interpretation, but curious minds press for clarification, something clear-cut and simple. The truth of the matter is that new media itself is organic – it grows and changes, and introduces new ways of making images, manipulating materials and establishing social connections. At the same time, it allows new relations to old traditions.

Central to all these changes is the undoing of conventional storytelling. The experiential nature of New Media encourages artists to break free from the constraints of historical convention and enter a realm of true expression, innovation, and evolution. As New Media students we have, over the last four years, spun our own individual tales. There were seldom definite borders within a world shaped by interdisciplinary processes of thinking and making. As New Media artists, developers and makers we have allowed our narrative to grow and flourish, and now they take up residence within the gallery space. If this clarifies anything, it will likely be that rather than answering the question 'what is New Media?', we should perhaps instead ask ourselves 'how does New Media?', and allow the art to define itself through the experience of you, the user.
